DYLAN HOOD

From Pro Hockey to Rebuilding the Body the Right Way

I’m a small-town kid from Osoyoos, BC who never took the traditional path.

At 16 years old, I walked on to the Kelowna Rockets straight out of Midget AA — undrafted. Five years later, after a solid WHL career that included finishing as the top scorer for the Moose Jaw Warriors with over 80 points, I was chasing the same dream every kid laces up for.

I got close — wearing a Boston Bruins jersey and competing in unofficial games.

But pro hockey isn’t linear.

With the challenges of being a free agent and the NHL lockout, I found myself in the ECHL, where it was now more competitive than ever. After playing in the All-Star Game, winning the Fastest Skater competition as a rookie, I finally felt like I proved I belonged.

On paper, everything was trending up.

Physically, I was breaking down.

When “Training Harder” Started Making Me Worse

That offseason, I did what most players do.

I trained harder.
Lifted more.
Pushed longer.

And unknowingly, I was destroying my body.

My effortless stride disappeared.
My hands felt heavy.
My hips locked up.
My shoulders ached.
My lower back was constantly angry.

I looked strong — but I didn’t feel strong.

The harder I worked, the worse I got.

What followed were years of injuries, bouncing between teams, and fighting a body that no longer moved the way it needed to for hockey.

Then in 2016, everything stopped.

I broke my leg in-game, tore every ligament in my ankle, and underwent multiple surgeries — leaving me unable to walk for nearly a year.

That moment didn’t just end a season.

It forced me to question everything I thought I knew about training.

The Question That Changed My Career

Why was I stronger than ever…
but less durable than I’d ever been?

Why did every solution make me feel better temporarily —
but never actually fix the problem?

I tried everything.

Traditional mobility.
Yoga.
Foam rolling.
Stretching.
Ice baths.
Manual therapy.

Some helped.
None lasted.

For years, nothing changed — until I stopped chasing relief and started studying how the body actually works.

Discovering the Missing Piece

Over the past 7+ years, I’ve become obsessed with human movement, joint health, and long-term athletic durability.

Not to rehab injuries —
but to understand why they keep happening.

Over the past several years, I began studying mobility, joint function, connective tissue, end-range strength and athletic movement at a much deeper level.

I learned from several different systems, coaches and methodologies, but the biggest change came from learning how to connect those principles into a complete approach.

For the first time since the early part of my career, my body began to feel predictable again.

It was not one exercise or temporary solution.

It was the result of following a progressive system and finally training the parts of my body that traditional programs had overlooked.

From a Personal System to the Mobility Membership

As I continued learning, testing and rebuilding my own body, I accumulated hundreds of exercises, workouts, progressions and coaching methods.

Honestly, I originally began organizing everything for myself.

I needed a better way to make sense of all the information in my own head.

I wanted one place where I could quickly find the right exercise, understand which progression should come next, organize my own training and create more consistent plans for the athletes I coached in person.

Over time, that personal system became much bigger than something I used only for myself.

It became the foundation of the Hood Athletic Edge Mobility Membership.

I spent more than two years organizing the workouts, joint-specific progressions, rebuilding sessions, preparation routines, recovery options and educational resources into one complete training system.

I also created the Interactive Mobility Guide to help members navigate the platform, identify the most relevant resources and understand where to begin based on their needs.

What started as a way to organize my own knowledge and make my own life easier is now something I can give to other athletes.

You are essentially getting access to the system I wish I had when my body first began breaking down – a system designed to help you stop guessing, understand your body and train your mobility with greater purpose.

Why I Coach the Way I Do Today

I have just recently retired — and I now train and coach athletes differently than I ever did as a player.

I help hockey players:

Because hockey doesn’t break muscles first.

It breaks joints and connective tissue.

Strength and conditioning remain essential – but when joint function, usable range of motion and connective-tissue capacity are consistently overlooked, even a strong athlete can struggle to move and perform at their best over the long term.

That philosophy is the foundation of Hood Athletic Edge — and the reason the Mobility Membership exists.
