DYLAN HOOD

From Pro Hockey to Rebuilding the Body the Right Way

I’m a small-town kid from Osoyoos, BC who never took the traditional path.

At 16 years old, I walked on to the Kelowna Rockets straight out of Midget AA — undrafted. Five years later, after a solid WHL career that included finishing as the top scorer for the Moose Jaw Warriors with over 80 points, I was chasing the same dream every kid laces up for.

I got close — wearing a Boston Bruins jersey and competing in unofficial games.

But pro hockey isn’t linear.

With the challenges of being a free agent and the NHL lockout, I found myself in the ECHL, where it was now more competitive than ever. After playing in the All-Star Game, winning the Fastest Skater competition as a rookie, I finally felt like I proved I belonged.

On paper, everything was trending up.

Physically, I was breaking down.

When “Training Harder” Started Making Me Worse

That offseason, I did what most players do.

I trained harder.
Lifted more.
Pushed longer.

And unknowingly, I was destroying my body.

My effortless stride disappeared.
My hands felt heavy.
My hips locked up.
My shoulders ached.
My lower back was constantly angry.

I looked strong — but I didn’t feel strong.

The harder I worked, the worse I got.

What followed were years of injuries, bouncing between teams, and fighting a body that no longer moved the way it needed to for hockey.

Then in 2016, everything stopped.

I broke my leg in-game, tore every ligament in my ankle, and underwent multiple surgeries — leaving me unable to walk for nearly a year.

That moment didn’t just end a season.

It forced me to question everything I thought I knew about training.

The Question That Changed My Career

Why was I stronger than ever…
but less durable than I’d ever been?

Why did every solution make me feel better temporarily —
but never actually fix the problem?

I tried everything.

Traditional mobility.
Yoga.
Foam rolling.
Stretching.
Ice baths.
Manual therapy.

Some helped.
None lasted.

For years, nothing changed — until I stopped chasing relief and started studying how the body actually works.

Discovering the Missing Piece

Over the past 7+ years, I’ve become obsessed with human movement, joint health, and long-term athletic durability.

Not to rehab injuries —
but to understand why they keep happening.

Two years ago, I finally found a system that did what nothing else could:

Not temporarily.
Permanently.

For the first time since my early career, my body felt predictable again.

That system didn’t just change how I trained.

It changed my mission.

Why I Coach the Way I Do Today

I have just recently retired — and I now train and coach athletes differently than I ever did as a player.

I help hockey players:

Because hockey doesn’t break muscles first.

It breaks joints and connective tissue.

And if you don’t train those systems properly, no amount of strength or conditioning will save you long-term.

That philosophy is the foundation of Hood Athletic Edge — and the reason the Mobility Membership exists.

Most programs build muscles. I build athletes that hold up in hockey.
